Symbolic Meaning of the Ouroboros

The OUROBOROS is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail. Although it originated in Ancient Egyptian iconography, it has appeared in Norse, Hindu, Greek, Hermetic and Gnostic spiritual traditions, and most notably appears as an alchemical symbol of wholeness or unity as well as immortality and infinity. Since the serpent is eating its own tail, it can represent the rediscovery of one’s origin and the Self that exists beyond the limitations of ego. It is the true spiritual identity unstained by matters of the world and constantly in the process of creation and re-creation. The ouroboros can also represent the endless cycles of nature’s patterns of creation and destruction, life and death, and the fusion or unification of the dualities within the realm of manifestation.
